Met with a man today who wiggled his toe. That may not sound very impressive. It certainly does not sound extraordinary. It also may seem like a strange thing to be asking a client to do.
The thing that made this situation both impressive and extraordinary is that this man is a quadriplegic.
The Doctor told him about 7 years ago after an accident on a football field that he would never walk again. The Doctor stated that he would be unable to feel or move his legs.
The first time I met with this man I taught him about creating anchors and we created a powerful anchor of excitement. Before we began he showed me the full range of movement that he had in his left arm. He stated that according to what the Doctors said, he should not be able to move this arm because of his condition. He stated that the doctors did not know how he could move the arm. He explained to me that one day he saw his little finger move. His hand and then his arm began to move and get stronger each day. When I came to visit he could lift his left arm up to his shoulder.
I asked him to lift his left hand up as high as he could. He did so and got his hand level with his left shoulder. I asked him to go again and lift it as high as he could. He repeated the action and once again it stopped when it reached his shoulder. That was the boundary of his movement.
Now I believed that he could move further if he believed he could. I believed that he could move beyond the limitations in his own life at this time. I believed that when he moves it to a greater degree his belief about what he is capable of will change.
I said to him, “Think about a time when you were really excited, think of a specific time. Go back to that time, see what you saw, hear what you heard and feel the feelings of excitement right now”.
I saw his head moving excitedly and bouncing around on his shoulders. He got so excited it seemed like he was having trouble breathing and began gurgling. (I thought to myself, I hope I don’t kill him). He got his composure back and was ok. He informed me that his lungs don’t work at a high level as a result of his condition. It was at that time that I suggested that he do some breathing exercises as a daily routine.
I then asked him to get excited about a second incident. He did so and once again the head bobbed around and his breathing became laboured.
Following this I asked him to move his hand again as high as it would go.
He lifted his hand. I said “have you ever moved it that high before”. He had not even notice that his left hand was above his head. He then looked at his arm and then at his hand with eyes that go wider and wider. He stated “no”. I asked him if he had ever done that before. Once again the answer was “no”. (This was such an exciting moment for both of us).
That was about 3 weeks ago.
Today was about his toe. I asked him the question where does your confidence sit in your body. He indicated his head or mind. I then had him do a spinning technique. He explained to me that he was feeling a little light headed. I then asked him to move his right hand or arm. NOTHING happened. I asked him to concentrate and still NOTHING.
At this point I could have given up and though “oh well, Maybe this just is not meant to be”.
Yet my psychology is such that I believed that there must be a way. I believed that just as we go the arm to move last time, there is something else that can happen now. I decided to try something different. I asked him where the belief that he would never move his right arm or two legs was.
He told me that this limiting belief was in his left big toe. I asked him what colour it was. He told me “RED”. I then asked him to collect all the red from his tow and hold it in front of him. I asked him if it changed colour or if it stayed the same. He told me that it stayed the same. I asked him to notice the direction the ball was spinning. I then had him reverse the spin and then speed it up until it began to take on a life of its own. At this point he shoved it back in where it came from. All of this he did.
To our amazement after I said, “now move your foot”. He moved his toe about 5 times. The movements were small, and both of us observed the movement. I was so excited that I jumped around with so much energy and excitement that I could not contain myself.
Later when I relayed the story to my Mothing in Law she explained to me that it was impossible. I know that it was a miracle that I had witnessed. I also believe that his condition will improve whilst ever he believes. As a life coach my purpose is to instil great belief in others.
This was an incredible experience and I recognise that this is still only the beginning. Life will continue to get better and better and better. I will find more people to help and move to greater levels of success and achievement, whatever form that takes.
I know who I am, and I know that I am beginning to learn what a human being is capable of.
“Your commitment to yourself is to discover who you really are, unlock your incredible self and unleash that on the world”.
