A slave to appetite

Had a profound and wonderful experience with a young woman who had struggled for many years with an eating disorder.   This woman stated that when she was about 7 years old she made a decision based on a thoughtless comment made by another person.  At this time she decided that she was large, and began living into this belief as a fundamental principle of her life.  From that time she had constantly struggled with weight, and this issue was having a major impact on her health and life.

The first thing that I did was a process called parts integration.  Through this process she learned that the part of her that wanted healthy appetite and living was subservient to the part of her that wanted a pleasure filled appetite of eating unhealthy and sugary foods.   In other words the desire to eat unhealthy food was greater than her desire to treat her body with the love and respect it deserved, by eating satisfying and good foods.  She realised that this had created internal conflicts within herself.

She said, “I recognise that I have been giving myself mixed signals.  My mind and body has been doing exactly what I have been telling it to do”.  Her eyes filled with tears and she brought her hands together and held them for a time in front of her body.  She then described a feeling of freedom that she had not experienced in this area of her life for a long time.  As we continued she did not want to release her hands from each other and this process had a deep impact on her mind and heart.  I took a moment at this time to compliment her on her amazing ability to “Unlock Her Incredible Self”.  She was an amazing learner and I reiterated this sincerely to her.  I knew that if I could get her to see how amazing she is, this challenge or any other that she faced in her life would shrink in significance.  Past issues that seemed insurmountable would become as a minor annoyance to her. She would discover a personal greatness and an ability to rise above any challenge that encroached upon her.

I then worked through two other processes with her. The first was a swish pattern.  This process utilises a visual strategy to increase desire for a nourishing apetite, whilst diminishing the desire for unhealthy and sugary food.  Following this I tested the result by “future pacing”, and to our delight the desire to indulge seemed all but gone.  Finally we did some time line work in which we used her imagination to firstly destroy the limiting belief she had in the area of physical health. (She had a belief that she was a large person).  We then used her imagination to step into the future and see, hear, and experience all the pain associated with her issue.  As we did this I saw her body become heavy and her face contorted with pain.  I asked her if that was the future that she wanted.  After I felt that she was determined to make a change we were able to implement a new belief into her unconscious mind. This new belief was that she was “slim”.  We then travelled in her imagination forward in time. I saw the excitement on her face as we travelled forward in time together and she got to see, hear and feel the compelling and bright future that awaited her.

It was incredible to be a part of this process and to have impacted her life in such a way.  As I was leaving I marveled at the change that had taken place.   There was a new light in her eyes.  There was conviction in her language. There was a difference in her whole persona.  She had grown immeasurably and I knew as I looked at her that her tiny issue, (in this case her eating disorder) did not stand a chance.   Remember “The future will happen if you are active or passive. You can create a compelling and bright future if that is what you want and you take the time to learn and apply the skills”.
